Coffee cultivation is heavily impacted by climate change, making growing increasingly challenging. Establishment of coffee plantations often drives rainforest deforestation. Coffee is often intensively treated with pesticides, negatively affecting ecosystems and farmer health. Social challenges include poor working conditions, low wages, and land rights issues. Going forward, we see risks of higher prices, limited supply and altered taste. This is something we need to take seriously.

A large part of the cocoa consumed in Europe comes from West Africa where child labour and deficiencies in upholding human rights have been revealed on cocoa farms, and the cocoa farmers often struggle to gain a living income. Cocoa is often illegally cultivated in protected natural areas, contributing to the destruction of valuable rainforests, and pesticide use is also a growing problem.
